The disk serial number that people refer to is a soft serialization number of the volume partition that's assigned when the drive is formatted; it can be altered programmatically, and will be altered every time the volume is reformatted. It also can be duplicated, and is directly settable when the Windows internal format is invoked - see SHFormatDrive() in the WinAPI section for details on how this can be used.
