The SMTP protocol is quite complicated, especially when you start getting into the extended features and the password implementations.

The processor usage can be due to another thread running in the context of your connection. Check to make sure you shut down your connection properly.

You might consider using a third party component which would make life a little easier. They generally support all the commands and also special concerns that some SMTP servers have. Not to mention the hours you spend on solving this problem cost more than the components do. Just think high ROI.

There are many products that work great in VFP.

One suggestion, I may be slightly biased towards, is SMTP Wizard from Seekford Solutions, Inc.
