Well, when I said "overhead", I was meaning, specifically: If you download, for instance, a 1 MB file, how many extra bytes have to be transmitted, in the headers of each packet? 1/3 more? 1/5 more? Is this the same in FTP and HTTP?

To answer this very theoretical - and not so urgent - question, I will have to analyze the structure and size of the IP packets sent in both cases.

Apart from the total bytes transmitted, the size of the individual packets might also make for slower or faster downloading. Another factor that can influence speed is the "window size": for instance, if the window size is 10, that means that 10 packets are sent before waiting for confirmation, before sending additional data packets.
