Actually, the log in screen is the first time MM attempts access to your dbc(s). Anything opened before that is a free table (MetaDBC, MetaData) ... unless you've added something else to be opened.

You may be onto something here. Are you using remote data? By default, MM uses registry settings to determine whether you're using remote/local data. If it can't find the setting, it defaults to local. We've had similar issues with NT/2000 when we switched to SQL data.
