Dana,

Can you find out if the Task Manager list is showing some process or application operating at 9n% CONSTANTLY?

If you can, and it does, get the name of the process. If it is not the VFP application (that one you say can't be stopped this way) then its name MAY indicate something. You may even have the nerve to stop that one and see what happens.

I had such a situation last week on my Win2K PRO system. A process named "MSDTC.EXE" was running 99% and I couldn't stop it using the Task Manager. BUT I found that I could rt-click on its name and get a popup that offered the option to DEBUG. I clicked DEBUG, got the debugger app. and then quit it. Got a warning first but said OK anyway and that got rid of the selected process. Of course I had to dig into MSDN to learn what that was and how to 'repair' it, but I eventually got through it and all is now OK again.

I don't know if the reason that I got the DEBUG option is because I have VS6 enterprise installed, pretty much in full.

good luck
