I finally found out: The former ISP told us to convert the proper unicode
that we used, to the old, MS-DOS (pre-codepage) codes. The new ISP failed to explain to us that all we had to do was to remove the conversion we used.

As soon as I tested EXPLORER and saw that it could indeed handle unicode I knew I was on the right track..
