You can reduce the height of the band by putting all fields in one line on top of each other. It should work but make report maintainace harder.

It is like it uses the whole band height to calculate whether the band will fit even though most of the lines in the band dont print since on any given detail line only one will print and the rest wont. The result is that my report is only printing on one third of the page...
