I think, it could be DAT, TXT, no extension, on any extension, you came up with :)

The icon on the file depends on which application is used to open file with this extension. If no application is attached, the dialog is shown up then you double click on the file. You can select any application (in case of textfiles you can use WordPad or NotePad) and then this program will become associated with this extension (unless you uncheck Allways use checkbox). So, the icon doesn't really matter. On the user's computer it could be different program associated with the particular extension...

If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
