Could you place a timer fired procedure into the client application. This procedure would update the login record for that user every time it fired, at say...2 minute intervals.

The application you use to view logged in users could then assume that anyone who had not updated his/her login record within the last 2 minutes was logged out or windows had crashed (I know that is fairly inconceivable).
