I have two problems at work. I can explain the first to my boss, but not the second.

I administer a 35 user VFP 6.0 application with over 200 tables for manufacturing, accounting, purchasing, sales, etc.

The first problem is that sometimes we get 'Record in use by another' messages that rapidly proliferate throughout the system which appear to lock everyone up indefinitely until all users are dropped out of the system and the database is closed and reopened. I believe this problem is caused by two users (at least) who are attempting to append a blank record to the same table (most likely the inventory movement table, which is used on almost all sales, purchasing and receiving transactions), and one of the users gets impatient and restarts his/her pc (we have such barbarians here).

The second problem is that when implicit locks are used in the application, sometimes a locked record is slow to be released (minutes after the transaction is complete). The same transaction, however, at a different time will release the appropriate record immediately after the transaction is complete.

If you have any idea why, you comments are appreciated!

TIA,

Thomas
