This isn't the place to discuss it, but it is possible to create non-hierarchical data models with XML; it has roughly the expressability of a network model, with a capability for self-reference and out-reference by embedding key nodes in the schema. It's also definitely capable of expressing a relational model schema, since that's what we're all involved with IAC, including all the nastiness of constructing 'parentless' child nodes unless you build a set of rules to prevent this.
