Maybe there should be *no* farmers in the US. Countries like Australia, New Zealand and South America can create food at incredibly cheap prices. New Zealand's beef, dairy and sheep farming is now so efficient that it costs less than half as much to grow a beast, slaughter it, freeze it and ship it to Europe than to grow a beast there. And if you look at apples in your supermarket you'll see that the "Washington" labels are increasingly replaced by "New Zealand" labels.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
