Jim;

California produces 25% of the agriculture of the United States. If you want to get into an interesting topic try water rights. We have state and federal laws that are in conflict with each other. Many land parcels are 160 acres and fall into a specific category. The conglomerates and big parcels held by rich families have special rights unlike the mom and pop farmers. Without water there will be no produce.

Another topic: Farm subsidies. Pay the farmer to not plant a crop. Conglomerates make out very well at this as do a few large farms. The little guy does not benefit. Some farm subsidies are paid to one entity several times for the same acreage and the same time period. That is, they get paid let us say to not plant corn, wheat, and oats. Three subsidies are paid to one entity for one field and one growing season.

Typically, farm related issues are presented as riders to bills. It is called “log rolling”. Some very powerful politicians have made good use of such tactics over the years to insure their constituents will benefit. It helped and helps them to get reelected.

Democracy in action is a thing of beauty to behold and cherish. Just be sure you are on the right side of the table to enjoy the benefits. Otherwise you will be under the table attempting to enjoy the scraps and crumbs that fall from above as the majority experiences. That is the true “trickle down theory”.
