Thanks for your suggestion! It was a glimmer of hope and then... pffft! nothing. I reinstalled the driver twice. The OEM CD that came with my PC has a driver and Microsoft also provdes a driver - I tried both. Still can't get those desktop settings to function again.
(Just a note... I was not uninstalling my driver then installing a new one, just reinstalling.)
