When I worked at Ampex Corporation (we invented video recording and a few other things) one of my jobs was to manage the calibration/metrology departments. I put in a request for $175,000 of test and measurement equipment so we could calibrate our own video equipment for corporate use. This would be a huge cost saving and getting the budget approved took 3 years and lots of meetings with vice presidents.

A new roof had been put on the building and was completed just as the new equipment arrived. We set up the equipment in a 7 foot tall relay rack cabinet we had just purchased. So impressive! Just before it was time to go home we had completed check out and all was well.

The next morning at 0630 I arrived at work through a driving rainstorm. The guys stopped me at the door. “Tom, don’t come in yet. You have to hear what happened”! After telling me what happened I could not believe it. The rain had leaked in one spot in the building (about 100,000 square feet) right on top of the new equipment rack! Everything was ruined.

I called our vice president who also took care of facilities and he said he had just changed our insurance policy. I would have to have had a minimum of $200,000 loss for the policy to kick in. The first 200,000 was not covered. So all was a loss. It took three more years to get my new equipment.

If only I had those two buckets in the picture! :)
