The only problem with your approach is that you're counting on the user having the Webdings font installed in his/her computer.
I like the idea of the xp-ish looking password box. Another idea I liked very much comes from Lotus Notes, where each keystroke generates 3 asterisks on the password box. Makes it very hard for onlookers to keep track of what you're typing.
