>PBS stations just finished rerunning Ken Burn's classic documentary on the Civil War. This documentary should be required viewing in American high school history classes since that period so defined the structure and essence of modern America.

FYI, Nathaniel's taking American History now, and mentioned last night that they'd watched some of the Burns' film in class this week.

>On that nostalgic note, does anyone else have any family lore of that period?

I know that some of my ancestors on my father's side fought for the South, but I don't know that we have any objects.

My great-grandfather had to leave Richmond very quickly sometime late in the 1800's. The story I've heard is that he was teaching blacks to read, and some locals didn't take kindly to it. (Guess liberalism is in the blood. <g>)
