That's interesting! Funny how it all ends mixed up, eh?

On my mother's side, we have the family traced back to Scotland in the 1300s. They came here in the 1640s. I'm a great-great (I forget how many) nephew of Percival Lowell, the astronomer. And a great (X 19) grandson of the Scottish Bishop who crowned Robert Bruce II, King of Scotland.

>I agree. Especially since historical programs are more true to history now then they were 20 years ago. Growing up in Wisconsin, I learned completely different stories than those growing up in the South when it came to the Civil War. Yet all information was presented as 'history.' I have actually found history books that contradicted each other. Perception is everything. Today's documentaries are quite a bit more 'true to history' from what I've seen. I watched a portion of this myself and found it very interesting.

>There is a 'tiny bit' of 'conflict' in my family regarding history anyway. :o) I am descended from the infamous 'Hutchinson' of the Boston Tea Party on my mother's side (quite a 'blight' on my ancestry but colorful to say the least) and had a Norwegian great aunt that ran an underground railroad during the Civil War (on my father's side). Yet my daughter is descended from Jefferson Davis on her father's side and all of their relatives fought on the side of the South. Needless to say, we have very 'spirited' conversations at times regarding history!

>>PBS stations just finished rerunning Ken Burn's classic documentary on the Civil War. This documentary should be required viewing in American high school history classes since that period so defined the structure and essence of modern America.

>>In my family, scraps remain. On my Mom's side of the family (yes, Koziol doesn't seem Southern and it's not - my Dad's family came here about 100 years ago) we still have Confederate currency, a CSA sword, and other memorabilia.

>>My grandmother once told me that she wasn't allowed to sing the Battle Hymn of the Republic in her fathers house. It was a Yankee song. My great-grandfather once told me of finding the remains of a Union patrol while laying the first telegraph lines to Miami circa 1910. My great-great-grandmother used to talk about fleeing the family farm with her parents (she was 3 or 4) in advance of Sherman in 1864.

>>On that nostalgic note, does anyone else have any family lore of that period?
