It sounds like the grid's custom property that stores current record number is not updated when row changes.

By that I mean that one row on the grid will have the dark blue background w/ white letters that denotes the selected row. However, when we move off of the row, the highlight stays on the first row, even though we can see our cursor moving through cells on other rows.
