In addition to what Martin also suggested, I have seen this happen with bad HP drivers. Is the printer an HP? Download a standard driver to test with instead of the HP driver for the specific printer, i.e. for a HP 4000 use the HP4 driver, etc... You can also try a different PCL language driver (i.e. PCL5 instead of PCL6,e tc).
