A launcher program looks at the time stamp of .exe on the server. If it is more recent than the one on the workstation, it copies the updated .exe from the server to the workstation. It then runs the .exe from the workstation.
Because the .exe is run from the local harddrive, you can copy an updated .exe to the server at any time. Here is Nick's launcher:
