You're exactly right. What you need is the algorithm that Windows uses to create the short file name. Unfortunately, I don't know it, nor know if there's an API function that can do it. As a result, I'd suggest creating the file first, then create the file. It would seem to be the simplest solution, but I don't know if your code can be modified to work this way.
