If you know where the printer creates the file, then you could use my idea but create the file the same place the driver would.

Otherwise, if creating the filename is under your control, why not just create short file names instead of long ones?

I just reread your first message and code. It's not clear to me: are you wanting the short name for a directory or a file? You then pass the directory (or file) to the printer driver which creates it?

What's the printer driver? What sort of file is it creating? Is there an updated version of the driver by any chance that will accept long file/path names?
