If the server is Windows 2000, make sure Service Pack 3 is applied. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q281672&

Do you mean that the server is going down in an uncontrolled fashion e.g. power disconnected while one or more workstations have the table(s) open? If you do that, all bets are off, anything can happen.
