Consider yourself lucky...

I've blown almost half of the VSS projects that I've worked with or rather someone involved in these projects. Between VSS corruption or deadlocked files and even a few files where changes where overwritten between checkouts.

It can and does happen...

This is not to say that VSS doesn't work or is problematic, but it UI is among the most clunky I can think of and it's a dog on the network. VSS hasn't seen a significant update since VFP 3.0 came out...

>Well then... tell them that there's no good alternative! Compared to all competitors VSS is most closely related to VFP and has proven to be very reliable. I've never had a single failure. One month ago I inadvertedly shut down the server while the laptop was still checking in into VSS. The consequence was a corrupted VSS database, but that very same VSS happens to have facilities that beautifully corrected the VSS database.

>>>Why do you want an alternative for SourceSafe? Is it only for the money or are you dissatisfied with certain aspects of SourceSafe?

>>It is money. It is very hard to convince top-management to spend a few dimes on software. Well, it is not exactly dimes, but we do have some specialized machines for making shoe, some of which are probably worth tens of thousands of dollars. If not more. So allow me to grumble a little when they don't want to spend a few hundred dollars on some needed software. VSS can be replaced by other products, but I have had other cases where the required software can't be easily replaced. E.g.: upgrade from VFP 6 to VFP 7.
