Thanx Bret,
We have checked all of the above and still have not found the error causing culprit. I still suspect using a win98 machine as the server is the cause as I would think win98's file handling capabilities to be somewhat different than win2000's, but that is just a guess at this point. I wish we could convince this client to try making a win2000 machine the server and the win98 machine a workstation to see if the problem continues. So far to no avail though.
