It should be approximately the same. I suggest you do whatever keeps your program more readable.

Creating a huge variable in memory can be time-consuming for VFP. But even for a 1000 pages, the size of the variable would be within reasonable limits, I believe.
If you didn't already do so, you may want to take a look at my download to print in text mode. Some features include preview in text editor or browser, both browser preview and printing includes bold and italic, export to Excel, imitation of most major VFP report features (grouping, multiple columns, ...). If you don't use it as-is, it may at least give you some ideas.
