You may try SendMessage / PostMessage API, but I'm not sure, it would work.

Update I've tried a test with normal timer, it didn't work. May be cppTimer can help, I haven't tried.

Also it would be nice to have timeouted GetFile dialog. May be I'll add it to the Wish List (I already wished for mask and multiselect option).
