Certainly wouldn't hurt, but not necessary.
What really matters in this business is experience. If you can prove you have successfully built and supported enterprise applications, you have all the validation you need. Without it, degrees mean very little.
IMO, if you want success, direct all your energy into learning to build commerical applications. Read everything you can get your hands on and practice, practice, practice. This was my approach and now I own my company and have all the work I can handle.
Who would you hire: Some with lots of experience and a good track record or someone with a piece of paper and little or no practical experience.
My degree is in Economics.
