Both.

We have a couple of VERY BIG VFP6 apps, one which was recently completed and took 4 years to develop. It will be the last app we convert to another platform/tool. That's why I say that when I retire from here I will still be supporting at least one VFP6 app. But VFP6 will NOT be used to start another application. We will not be upgrading VFP6 to any higher version nor will we be upgrading any Win95 or Win98 boxes beyond Win2000. My own personal opinion is that before MS comes out with a viable version of LongHorn we will have moved our 30 servers and 350 workstations to the Linux platform. That's just a guess, but at the pace of development of Linux and with the number of market sectors moving to Linux, it is wouldn't suprise me. It will depend on what apps in Linux can be used to replace special apps in WinXX. We standardized on WordPerfect 10 years ago, so running it under Linux is no problem, but moving to OpenOffice wouldn't be to big a problem either. With OO covering wordprocessing, spreadsheets, presentations and graphics apps it has 95% of the office tasks covered. We were discussing Borland's Delphi + ODBC to Oracle, using CLX, which would allow us to recompile under Kylix with very little effort. Oracle runs under Linux.\
My boss favors Java, but is concerned about Swing's speed. I prefer C++ using KDevelop & Qt 3.0 widgets. Personally, that is where I think we will end up. Why use Java when you could have the full power and speed of C++ and the development speed and ease of KDevelop with QT? We already use Linux in production and in the server room. I have been doing extensive testing of various GUI RADs, and after recent discussions we will probably be putting up our first Linux test dev box. Life is good, life is fun!
