Alan,

The thing that I keep coming back to, and that doesn't get picked up by participants here, is that (to me, at least) Select-SQL has equal or better "risks" as regards UDFs yet they are acceptable there.

To me the difference is a very simple one - there is adequate WARNING about using UDFs in that command.

I fail to see why UDFs will not 'run' in TYPE(). Especially given what's said in the documentation for TYPE() - that they will run.

I see no reason as to why they won't run, myself. IF there is potential performance degradation, or IF there is risk that the state of things will be changed, then what's wrong with a WARNING similar to what's provided for Select-SQL??? After all, we're all big boys and girls and if we go and do something 'stupid' in a UDF run in TYPE() then we can take responsibility - PROVIDED THAT THERE'S ADEQUATE WARNING.
