Well, as for simplication, the steps I described for the base form can't be any simpler. There is nothing more to add in there. However, as for the layout on how you want to present the picklist, this is as per your own needs. Here, we use our list module which does it all. However, I don't expect you'll need all that. A simple table with a few links to click on and pass that value to the calling form should do.
