This is by design. Even in SQL databases this is true. Once you have the number generated, you can not revert it. If you need this to happen, then you need to create a view or remote view and do not make the autonumber field updatable. That way, the autonumber will only be generated when you execute a TABLEUPDATE(). Once you issue the TABLEUPDATE(), the autonumber is then generated. At this point, again, you can not revert the autonumber.
