There was a problem we found with Access and Assign, where they would quit working if you had a string in the Watch window that could not be evaluated. This is fixed in a newer build than the one you have.

If you put val("123 in the watch window, you will see this. Clearing the value, and restarting VFP should allow the build you have to work correctly, unless you are seeing something else.
