I reflected about your question and I thing It would be better if MS would insert Downward Diagonal lines (like in shape) in the header of locked columns to indicate that they are locked.
If they do that, we could change the properties and see that change.

A reason for that is that if we insert an object (checkbox or another object)it's not possible now to se what we did until we not unlock those columns.

I thing (IMO) that is the right behavior for objects at design time.
