>>I suspect it's because most didn't want to engage JVP.<<

I found myself engaging him repeatedly over what I saw as extreme statements of claim ("VFP has lousy remote data access, VFP apps are po-dunk, Stored Procedures are always better than Remote Views for accessing data, ADO is really fast...") I found it curiously difficult to actually "argue" re these points because the threads immediately descended into what I perceived as circumlocution and sophistry. "Debating" rather than arguing technical merit.

I have no doubt that JVP was an extremely accomplished debater. However, "truth" in this industry is not determined by whomever scores the most semantic points. Which is where we always seemed to end up. There are some astonishing wiki pages illustrating this.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
