I rarely disagreed with his message, but had more than one conversation with him about his delivery. Unfortunately, I could never get across to him that he was alienating people with his delivery style -- he couldn't see that it should matter, that the message should be accepted anyway.
I read a book once called "Media Virus". It's about how the media is used (and abused) to deliver unpalatable messages by packaging them in palatable wrappers. The result is that the message is accepted. In John's case, it's just the opposite -- he wraps a reasonable message in an unpalatable wrapper and the result is that the message is lost.
