I spent some time in the midwest while in the Air Force. At our Air Defense Command Remote Radar Sites, we would send out a guy with a half-track and two weeks rations to do preventative maintenance in the autumn. You never knew what would occur as far as weather. Sometimes a storm front would hit you without warning and it would be a real attention getter.

I must say the autumn weather in the mid west was typically mild and enjoyable compared to the other seasons of the year. Wherever I went (I was on an inspection team – on the road 5 days out of 7) the locals would always say, “We never had weather like this till you got here”! Other guys would say, “If you think this is bad you should go to” they would always have a name of a radar site that had worse weather. I have a personal list of places to avoid at all cost! :)
