It looks like you do not have SP5 and your XLS file contains not plain values, but something like formulas, macros, etc.. From my experience even VFP7 sometimes cannot handle these situation properly. So the easiest way I have found is to use excel automation to check whether xls file is earliear versions, like Excel 2/3, and save it as excel 2/3 otherwise.
