Agreed, but pessimistic buffering was not offered by C/S backends until recently and not all workflows tolerate "jane is using this record, please try later..."

Optimistic locking generally works well. If there is a need for audit, a SP that inserts every insert/update into a log table works v. well- we use it all the time in our healthcare apps.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
