In our company, we have used native VFP tables for 3 years now. We never got a corruption in the DBF files. The indices got corrupted twice, which I solved with REINDEX.

The key factor to reduce data corruption I believe to be using the FLUSH command after every change.

Of course, you should do regular backups, whether you choose VFP tables or a C/S solution.
