This has been a place where 3rd party vendors have jumped on to provide controls that have built in formatting capabilites. The advantage of using this kind of method is that it gives you as a programmer much more control of exactly how you want to format and extract data entered. The downside is that simple formatting (like in your case) becomes much more time consuming. My guess is that Microsoft will change this in the future.
