But, I doubt that VFP can run on it - does anyone know the answer?

I (and others here [for sure]) have connected to a Linux MySQL Server through through ODBC using VFP. The VFP SQL command set returned cursors as expected. Updates worked as expected. I did not play or review MySQL stored procedures.

Also tried some ADO. The connection and record strings did not error out - but I [may have] only received field names [and no other data]. It was very interesting.
