W2K runs fine on both AMD and Intel CPUs, there are no known problems with either. AMD lately has offered somewhat better price/performance ratio but the difference is small. However the CPU choice does limit the range of motherboards; really you should evaluate motherboards rather than CPUs. Sites like Tom's Hardware Guide and AnandTech are good starting points.
You also need to decide if you want to assemble a system yourself ("white box") or buy an off-the-shelf unit from a name-brand vendor. If the former, AMD can be a good choice. If the latter, you get whatever the maker puts in the computer. AMD is not as common here as Intel but there is some presence in HP/Compaq and (IIRC) Gateway.
