I chose an AMD Athlon XP not because of price, but rather performance. The P4s eliminated some on chip chaching (L1 and L2) that, in some instances brought the clock speed down to 200 Mhz. Further, the number of pipes was doubled which effectively doubled the time to load and flush them. At least in the early chips, the clock speed is largely misleading. I understand, however, that some of the above problems have been addressed, but how accurate the speed comparisons would be is still questionable.
