Jim,
I like desktops for I have freedom to choose AMD :) I work with Athlon for years under win9x, win2k, winXP with no compatibility problems.
In a few months I plan to buy a new desktop and it'll absolutely be an AMD. AMD is not only cheaper but faster. OTOH if you don't have a chance to assemble yourself than it might matter.
