Personally, I dislike anything that includes the name "ZIP": several other formats, including the free CAB format, are 30% smaller (typical).
I use pacomp.exe from
www.powerarchiver.com/download (search for "Command Line Version"). pacomp is a command-line utility. This is probably not as pretty as working with a class, but it does work. Previous versions were free; I am not sure whether the latest version is still free.
