We did something like that in our DOS version. We locked the user in to the serial number of the hard drive not knowing at the time that when the operating system changed the HD serial number also changed. Along came Win95, Win98 and all the other versions. This caused us much trouble and left a bad taste in everyones mouth.
A problem is a problem only as long as it has a possible solution. Lacking that, it becomes a FACT!
