>>That guy is expanding to 8 operating rooms, making his the biggest in the province.<<

Joint Replacement is an excellent candidate for private care IMHO. Osteoarthritis is sufficiently common that some form of rationing is essential which translates to a waiting list or a strict "criteria" selection mechanism in a public system. OA is debilitating but not fatal so there is no moral imperative as there is with (say) bowel cancer. So people can wait, or they can choose to spend $ and go private.

IMHO this guy is doing you a favour for 2 reasons. First, he is removing 8 OR's worth of cases from the public list that you pay for. The more $ he earns, the more he saves you. Second, he provides "the alternative" for people who might otherwise be complaining mightily if there were no option but to wait.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
