Last night on 60 Minutes (TV show) there was a segment about a life prisoner getting a heart transplant.
In the segment they noted that a regular person cannot get on to a transplant waiting list unless they have some insurance that covers it (which I believe medicaid there does) or puts $120,000 up front.
We've all also heard of ambulances that want the money up front (not at accident scenes but on calls to them), and if you don't have it they just leave.
We've all also heard that it is not the nearest hospital that will take uninsured (non-accident) emergencies, but rather only specific hospitals.

I think the biggest confusion comes from the term "socialized", which many appear to equate to "socialist".
